Unit 2 -Week #6 - Homework due by Friday, February 12, 2010
Homework #7
Read pp. 80-84. Note the difference between response and explanatory variable.
Do #’s 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4.
Homework #8
Read pp. 84-91.
Do #’s 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8. Then go to p. 95 and do #2.14.
Homework #8
Read pp. 84-91.
Do #’s 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8. Then go to p. 95 and do #2.14.
Homework #9
Read pp. 97-102 carefully- pay special attention to the “Facts about Correlation” section.
Do #’s 2.17, 2.18, 2.19, 2.20.
To do correlation on your calculator (which is a must):
Enter one set of data in L1, the corresponding set in L2.
STAT, CALC, LinReg, ENTER – this will show four things on the screen – you want “r”
for correlation.
** Now do p. 103-106 #’s 2.23, 2.24 (this one will take you a while), 2.26, 2.27, 2.29
Unit 2 - Week #7 - Homework due by Friday, February 19, 2010
Homework #10
Read pp. 106 – 116.
Do #’s 2.30, 2.32, 2.33, 2.35.
Note: To find “a” and “b” for the linear regression equation – use STAT, CALC, and then go to #9 – LinReg (a + bx). (Don’t use #5 – LinReg (ax + b).)
Note: Anytime you read “What percentage of the variation can be explained by the least-squares regression . . .” – all you need to do is find
.
Homework #11
Read pp. 130-137.
Do #’s 2.53, 2.55, 2.57, 2.58, 2.59
Unit 2 - Week #8 - Homework due by Friday, March 5, 2010
Homework #12
Design a question that might show a relationship between two variables:
Does average number of hours of TV watched per week affect GPA?
Does height affect the number of dates a person goes on a month?
Does weight effect ACT score?
The question you are going to investigate needs to be approved by the instructor.
Then ask 20 students at DLHS for an explanatory variable and response variable.
Then prepare a sheet of paper that shows the following:
A scatterplot of your results
The correlation coefficient
A description of the strength of the correlation
The linear regression equation
The regression line drawn on the scatter plot
Two predictions using the regression equation
An example of extrapolation using the regression equation
